  • Painful muscle spasm that occurs when sweating profusely in heat
  • Electrolyte imbalance caused by sweating
  • Water may be drunk but person must replace lost electrolytes

Avoidance of heat cramps

  • Thirst cannot be used as a guide for the need to drink fluid
  • Water must be taken every 15-20 min in hot environments
  • Drink electrolyte replacement fluids
  • Muscles being used are most susceptible
