Limitations of a Mouth-bit Escape Respirator

Mouth-bit escape respirator are intended for ESCAPE ONLY, NOT for:

  • Routine  work
  • Emergency response (entering a response zone)

NOTE: It is acceptable to periodically breath through the respirator, if required to demonstrate how to properly use the respirator. This will not shorten the life of the cartridge.

  • Mouth-bit Respirators must not be used in atmospheres with less than 19.5% oxygen or immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) concentrations.
  • Not intended for use will all chemicals at the Jubail site such as butadiene, formaldehyde, methylene chloride or certain organics which go quickly through the filter cartridge.

Note: Other cartridges are made especially for certain chemicals.

Mouth-Bit Respirators are designed to give maximum protection for a short period of time:

  • 15 minutes for the Drager 3200 Escape Respirator.

If you use a mouth-bit respirator, you do not have time to:

  • Put away tools.
  • Finish a task.
  • Call the control room.
  • Discuss the situation.

You must leave the area immediately!

Mouth-bit respirators may give you a false sense of security. Don’t be fooled. If you use a mouth-bit respirator you must evacuate to a safe location quickly.
